After weeks of speculation, President Joe Biden announced on Sunday he would withdraw as the Democratic presidential candidate. He plans to fulfill his duties as President until the end of his term in January 2025. Within 30 minutes of his withdrawal, President Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to run as the Democratic presidential candidate. “I am honored to have the president’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” Vice President Harris stated.
Here is President Biden’s letter to Americans:
In the coming days, Vice President Harris will be hitting the campaign trail to meet with Americans and lay out the choice in front of voters in the fall. There cannot be two more starkly different visions for where we want our country to go. Vice President Harris said she plans to show the dark path of Project 2025, with less freedom and more division or choose the path to pull together and do the work — for the people.
Vice President Kamala Harris swiftly established herself as the Democratic front-runner to take on Donald J. Trump within hours of President Biden’s exit, fundamentally rewiring the presidential contest at warp speed. She has the number of DNC delegates needed to be the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee committed to her and within hours raised nearly $50 million. After 24 hours of Vice President Harris’ announcement to run for president, her campaign had raised $100 million.
Once Vice President Harris is officially nominated by the DNC delegates through a virtual roll call to be scheduled between August 1-8, Vice President Harris will announce her running mate who will automatically be the Democratic vice presidential nominee.
At her first campaign rally in Wisconsin, Vice President Harris touted her career experience: former prosecutor, former Attorney General, former U.S. Senator and currently Vice President. In addition, she slammed Trump:
“In those roles, I took on perpetrators of all kinds: predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. So, hear me when I say, I know Donald Trump’s type.”
Let’s get to work!
